INDIe Project

About the Project

INDIe and INDIe4All are two Erasmus + KA201 projects (2018-1-ES01-KA201-050924 and 2020-1-ES01-KA201-083177) in the field of school education, that fall within the category of “Strategic Partnerships supporting innovation”.

  • INDIe started on September 1st 2018 and will last three years up to August 31st 2021.
  • INDIe4All started on September 1st 2020 and has a duration of three years as well.

Both are coordinated by the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Spain, through the Digital Content Creation Center, which mission is to empower teachers for an improved learning process.

The INDIE project aims at boosting the use of digital instructional contents for education in both primary and secondary schools by:

  1. Providing a tool to help teachers to become authors of rich digital learning units.
  2. Creating repositories on a regional level where authors publish their learning units and other teachers can become “consumers” of this material for their own classes.

Both INDIe and INDIe4all are therefore perfectly aligned with the recently announced Digital Education Action Plan (2021-27) which states two strategic priorities:

  • Digitally-competent and –confident educators and education & training staff.
  • High quality content, user-friendly tools and secure platforms, respecting privacy and ethical standards.

Create

Give access to digitally skilled teachers to the authoring tool INDIeAuthor, which is being developed within the Digital Content Production Center (in spanish CPCD) of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena. INDIeAuthor is an innovative tool which allows authors with no programming knowledge to, after a simple training, produce rich digital content for online publication. INDIeAuthor acts as a proxy to create HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript5 based documents and includes different components that can be used out of the box by the authors: gamification module (definition of badges, points and leaderboards) and a learning analytics module (teachers and parents can monitor the interaction of the students with the learning units).

Thanks to INDIe4All, INDIeGenerator, the horsepower under INDIeAuthor, has been modified so that the generated code chunks which build up the learning unit webpages, comply with accessibility standards. On the other hand new interactive activities have been introduced to substitute the ones that are difficult to adapt, as is a drag and drop activity for example.

Develop a repository, INDIeOpen, for publication of learning units created with INDIeAuthor. The repository includes a search functionality and a rating system with inclusion of comments. Once selected in the repository a learning unit can be easily linked from any e-learning system with LTI standard compliance (Moodle, Sakai, Blackboard, etc…). On completion of the project, the repository will be prepared for a broader use: on a first step, more teachers as users (“consumers” of existing learning units for their class) can be incorporated, and on a second step, calls for authors will be launched, in order to gradually enrich the repository.

Learn

Produce a set of open learning units and upload them to the repository from a range of subjects and school levels. INDIe has developed courses on intellectual property in digital content creation, on cybersecurity and on Physics, Maths, English as a Foreign Language, etc. INDIe4All is also preparing a course for the professional development of teachers and education staff on inclusive education for disabled students.

Learning Impact Awards 2021

The IMS Global (IMS Global Learning Consortium) is USA based and is the world-leading non-profit collaborative advancing edtech interoperability, innovation, and learning impact, it has more than 700 institutional members (Google, Microsoft, Moodle, Oracle, etc. and publishers like Pearson, Santillana and many more) and is the responsible for many of the interoperability standards (LTI for example that the e-learning platforms use) which INDIeOpen relies on. The INDIeOpen platform was one of the 21 finalists in the 2021 edition of the IMS Global Learning Impact Awards. For the final medals, the decision was based on a jury of experts and, to a lesser extent, on public vote.

SIMO Educación 2021

INDIeOpen, as the result of both projects INDIe and INDIe4All, applied to the 2021 edition of "Good Practices in education" medals of the SIMO educación fair, the greatest Edtech Spanish fair. More than 200 companies from 22 different countries participated in the fair, with more than 10000 attendees in the last face to face edition before COVID, which turns SIMO into an outstanding amplifier for the achieved results. The 2021 edition took place online, and INDIe was one of the 34 selected projects for the final round.
